Development of Iron and Steel Metallurgy in AachenM. Braun
The interest in our education topics is increasing, and as a result we have an increased number of well-trained graduates (Dipl.-Ing. or M. Sc. degrees) in steel metallurgy. In our courses of study, iron and steel metallurgy content is taught alongisde the offerings provided by related departments and institutes at RWTH Aachen University. Courses are offered in both German and English.
In the field of iron and steel metallurgy, the research activities range from agglomeration and reduction of iron ore to control of solidification in ingot and continuous casting. Deeper understanding of material properties at high temperature and of processes concerning new steel grades are among the key research topics of our scientific staff; most of our 20 team members are currently working on their doctoral thesis.
Numerous networks like CHAMP, the Centre of Highly Advanced Metals and Processes, or the Forum of Materials Science and the Forum of Environmental Science at RWTH Aachen University, co-working in areas of German Steel Institute VDEh, and in international projects demonstrate the excellent connections in daily life of iron and steel research. The Chair of Iron and Steel Metallurgy co-operates with the other institutes of the Division of Metallurgy and Materials Science.
