The majority of the component failure cases is due to the fatigue phenomena.
In order to avoid these catastrophic failures, the lifetime assessment group provides reliable concepts to estimate the component lifetime. Most of the projects focus on the development of concepts to predict the short fatigue crack growth.
The load type, the geometry of the component and the quality of the surface as well as the material properties with regard to the microstructure have to be considered in order to identify the critical areas of the component. Through the application of multiscale modelling approaches, life-expectancy concepts are verified and extended based on experimentally determined data sets.
